Why Microsoft Access?

Access is part of the Microsoft Office suite and you are probably very familiar with some of the components such as Excel, Outlook and Word. This means that anything we create for you in Access is written using software that is already integrated into your existing work flow.

Access can be used on many levels. You may have created a simple table that allows you to keep track of customers and addresses but integrating that functionality into a system that records and sends quotations; converts them to Orders and then tracks the production of those orders is usually way beyond the capability of an employee who is better utilized to do their main job. This is where we come in. We create the application for you and this is going to be exactly what you want. It won’t be using elementary processes such as direct access to database tables but will utilize forms which will have coding behind them to carry out the database functionality in a controlled manor. We can do all sorts of things to make your office more automatic by asking the Access database to send emails to clients after some processes are completed or, update Excel spreadsheets that you already use.

We can advise on whether it is appropriate to use the inbuilt (and very effective) database or whether it might be appropriate to use a Microsoft SQL server database which can be on your internal network or out in the cloud i.e. AWS, Azure, or on a server in your WAN or LAN. The cloud solution is ideal if you have a multi-site requirement.

The applications that we write are primarily code based and can therefore be very logical in their functionality and are normally compiled so that they cannot easily be corrupted by mistake. The pre-compiled application is always available to the client to make changes or make additions such as add new reports etc.

Case Studies

Wrexham County Council

In 2001 we worked with Wrexham County Council to design a property management system that would look after all their non-domestic properties. The application was still in use in 2022 and provides valuable reference information.

At one time it was installed on almost 70 workstations and provided a central store of all historical data for the buildings. It covered basic contact details, condition surveys, asbestos reports and even handled all the maintenance orders for the County Council.

CTM Wholesale Wrexham

CTM Wholesale grew from a startup company in the center of Wrexham in the late 1980’s and developed into a thriving Grocery wholesale business which was later sold on to Booker Ltd in the mid 2000’s. At that time it had moved to extremely large facilities in Rhostyllen, Wrexham.
Our software was developed specifically for them from day one and migrated to Microsoft Access in the mid 90’s.
It controlled order taking, warehouse picking with scanners, point of sale checkouts (yes! with Access), delivery and run calculations and invoicing. It also had a dial in facility for representatives to transmit orders from their laptops to the warehouse from the retail shops.

Health and safety equipment Sales and Hire

This was developed over the last 4 years and is a brilliant example of the way we converted a company relying on spreadsheets and many man hours to a company that had most of its processes automated with data stored centrally. See our digital strategy page

The company is a supplier and hirer of Safety equipment for the Wind Farm and Working at height industries. The software we developed converted their existing Excel spreadsheets into a couple of Microsoft Access applications which control the hire and inspection of the equipment.

It handles quotations, orders, certifications, invoicing etc. and has allowed to company to satisfy all ISO requirements.

Childrens play equipment manufacturing company

We developed software for one of the largest softplay manufacturing companies in the UK.

Orders are prcessed from start to finish and managed by our system. Projects can be planned and monitored on a time/cost basis from start to finish

Engineering Component Supplier, Wrexham

This company came to us in 2018 to convert some very complicated spreadsheet processes that created certificates that are supplied with components into an Access frontend connected to a database.

The resulting system uses predefined tables which feed the certificates using careful logic mostly controlled by software coding. The company can be happy in the knowledge that the correct information is included in the certificates to their clients and that no typos occur.
